Hey everyone! It’s been a minute since I’ve last updated my blog on my journey from relaxed to natural hair. I’ve been busy with this new job and trying to adjust to the hours they have me working (that’s another blog post) that I have been neglecting many things.
So, I’m going to do a quick update on how my transition is going, while I have the energy tonight. It’s been 16 weeks since my last relaxer (12/02/10) (yea!) and I’m still hanging tough! I haven’t applied any type of heat styling (e.g. curling iron, blow dryer, and flat iron) to my hair since about the end of December 2010 and I think my hair is thanking me for it. I do shampoo and deep condition under the dryer faithfully once a week and co-wash about every 3-4 days. I’ve been rocking the Flat Twist for my transitioning style and recently started doing the Bantu Knot Out style. I haven’t taken any recent pictures, but the next time I put the Bantu Knot Out in my head, I’ll take some photos and post them. I’ve wanted to do a couple of videos on my transition, but the humidity fans (if this is the correct name) in both my bathrooms automatically turn on when the light is turned on. So, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to be heard with the fan running, but I’ll try to do a test video and see if the fans drown me out.
Also, I’ve been thinking about whether I should get braids in my hair for summer, or continue my six month journey (July 2011) and then cut off the relaxed portion of my hair to sport a shorter ‘do. I want braids for the easy maintenance, but don’t want all that extra hair on top of my head because I sweat very badly during the summer when the humidity is high. Sporting a shorter ‘do for the summer would be cooler and easier to maintain; plus my hair grows so fast during the summer that it probably wouldn’t be short for very long. So, I’m contemplating moving my “chop off” date to be sometime around the Memorial Day weekend. I’ll be about four and a half months into my transition, but not sure how much new growth I’ll have by then. Right now, I think I have about one and half inches of new growth maybe a little more but not enough for me to start chopping. I’ll see how my hair and I are fairing around the first week of May and then decide what my next move will be. Maybe I’ll try a new look for my birthday, since it’s the second week of May. Who knows! Until then, I’ll continue wearing the Flat Twist, Bantu Knot Out, and Two Strand Twist styles to help in my journey from relaxed to natural hair.
Well, that’s the latest news and information on my natural hair journey. Hopefully, there won’t be as much time between my next update. This new job has me burning the midnight oil and working like an Egyptian Slave (heard Egyptian Slaves work harder than Hebrew Slaves. Lol), but once my body clock adjust to these crazy hours, I find another job with normal working people hours, or I win the lottery (whichever comes first—do I see a lottery win in my future?) I’ll update more often. Until next time, peace and hair grease! ![]()
